Breaking the Cycle: The Barrio Logan College Institute Story
Across the country, college dreams are often shaped — or shattered — by zip codes. In underserved communities, systemic barriers like low graduation rates, financial hardship, and limited access to resources make higher education feel out of reach. In San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighbourhood, where just 3% of adults hold a bachelor’s degree, the odds are steep. But Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) is proving that with the right support, education can become the most powerful pathway out of poverty. Founded in 1996, BLCI believes in starting early and staying long. Their holistic programs begin in 3rd grade and continue through college, offering students and their families the tools, guidance, and belief to thrive — academically, emotionally, and professionally. Through year-round academic support, 1:1 tutoring, college readiness, and leadership development, BLCI transforms the trajectory of students' lives — and by extension, their communities.
